Prof. Dr. Shishir Lakhey is internationally trained and widely regarded as one of the best orthopaedic doctors in Nepal, with an exceptional career spanning clinical excellence, academic leadership, research, and national healthcare development. With advanced specialization in trauma surgery, complex fracture management, arthroscopic joint surgery, and joint replacement procedures.

He completed his MBBS from Madras University in 1989 and later completed his MS in Orthopaedics from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 1998. His pursuit of advanced surgical mastery led him to undertake fellowship training in Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty at AIIMS in 2002, followed by specialized training in Knee and Shoulder Surgery in Cairns, Australia, in 2006. This international exposure has positioned him as a leading authority in minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery and advanced joint care in Nepal.

Dr. Lakhey has made remarkable contributions to orthopaedic education in Nepal, with over 19 years of teaching experience as an MBBS student and 12 years training postgraduate MS Orthopaedics residents. He served as Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at BPKIHS, Dharan, and later as Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Kathmandu Medical College. His influence extends beyond teaching, as he has also trained B.Sc. Nursing students and served as an examiner for MBBS and MS Orthopaedics examinations at multiple universities of Nepal.

Currently, Prof. Dr. Shishir Lakhey serves as the Principal Consultant and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Nepal Mediciti, where he leads complex orthopaedic and trauma surgery services. His clinical expertise includes advanced arthroscopic joint surgery, joint replacement, acetabulum fracture management, and comprehensive trauma care, making him a trusted referral surgeon for complex orthopaedic cases.

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Prof. Dr. Lakhey has demonstrated exceptional leadership in research and professional development. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Nepal Orthopaedic Association Journal and currently serves as the President of the Arthroscopy Society of Nepal (ASON). He is also an active peer reviewer for prominent medical journals such as the Journal of Nepal Medical Association (JNMA) and Kathmandu University Medical Journal (KUMJ), contributing to the advancement of evidence-based orthopaedic practice.

His research achievements include authoring chapters in medical textbooks and presenting over 30 research papers at national and international orthopaedic conferences. These contributions have strengthened Nepal’s presence in global orthopaedic research and helped disseminate best practices in trauma and joint surgery.

Prof. Dr. Lakhey has also played a vital role in disaster preparedness and healthcare governance. He has served as Chief of the KMC Disaster Management Unit and is an Advisor Member of the Disaster Management Committee and Infection Control Committee. Additionally, he is a member of the Institutional Review Board and Medical Board, ensuring ethical standards and patient safety in clinical practice. Beyond the hospital and academic setting, Prof. Dr. Shishir Lakhey is a respected medical columnist for The Kathmandu Post, where he contributes expert insights on orthopaedics, trauma care, and public health awareness.
